Antique Amphora with Twisted Handles

€560.00

A large antique amphora from the early 1800s used to store liquids (most commonly olive oil or wine). This striking piece is a very rare find and was found as part of a noble family’s home in Puglia. What makes it truly unique, aside from its elegant form and large proportion, are the wonderfully handcrafted twisted handles - a testament to the skill of the potter. The hand thrown vessel originates from the small Salento town of San Pietro in Lama - once a renowned centre of pottery production. The creamy-hued glaze on this amphora was common to local domestic pottery, especially with ceramics storing food, olive oil or wine. Called ‘robba bianca’ it represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, and is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. The amphora would have had a wood stopper wrapped in a piece of cloth to seal contents. This antique amphora has seen over 200 years of service to its family, and naturally shows some charming signs of age. The historical example would make the perfect decorative centrepiece adding some farmhouse charm to any home or space, especially when pared with the matching pieces as seen in the images.

Found in San Pietro in Lama
