Antique Calabrese Yeast Pot with Lid
A charming antique yeast pot hailing from the southern Italian region of Calabria, and particularly rare with its unique ‘sponge-effect’ pattern and intact lid. Dating back to the late 1800s, this antique and rare piece of pottery originates from the Calabrese town of Seminara - famous for its age old ceramic tradition. The vivid colour combination of turquoise blue/green and ochre brown set against the creamy base, is typical of Seminara ceramics. The yeast pot has a beautiful form and handles that highlight the handmade quality of the vessel. The antique pot has that well-loved patina that is testament to its daily use, where it was originally used for storing the family’s mother yeast. The unique surface technique - which would have been applied by hand and commonly using a potato skin as a brush - means each piece is one of a kind. Today the antique vessel would be ideal as storage or a decorative display piece to add a splash of colour to any home or space.
