Antique Tree of Life Amphora
A particularly rare amphora with a hand painted tree of life decoration adorning the front in verdant green. Originating from the southern Italian region of Calabria, these motifs of vegetation were often abstract and used on ceramics of all kinds. They were hand painted primarily to bring good fortune and longevity to a largely rural folk of the time, in the hopes of a bountiful harvest. This wonderful antique example dates back to the mid 1800s and would have been originally used for holding wine. Its perfect size, form and handles highlighting its hand crafted quality. Today the rustic piece would add impact to any home or space, injecting some country charm, especially when pared with the matching ceramics as seen in the images.
Found in Ostuni
the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).
Dimensions: H27cm x W16cm x D15cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
