This hand painted plate with its distinctive adornment has a baroque feel, without being overly floral. Dating back to the early 1900s from the southern Italian region of Calabria, the enchanting mix of colours including mustard yellow, cobalt blue and maroon are set against a well-loved buttermilk glaze, giving this piece a real dynamism and uniqueness. Please note the minor repair on the rim, as seen in images - the repaired border has been carefully repainted, which shows its importance as a practical and loved piece by the original owner. The old terracotta pottery from southern regions of Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria, like this plate, have a lovely handmade, rustic feel and were used primarily for everyday, domestic use. This piece would make a lovely addition to the kitchen, as decorative display piece, or a great centrepiece on a table for fruit.
