Antique 'Evil Eye' Ivory Jug
An antique hand-thrown jug with an eye motif traditionally hand painted to ward off evil. The abstract design in blue set against ivory white renders this large jug uniquely graphic. It also has a harmonious form, highlighting the skill of the potter. The lines in blue and ochre encircling the body of the jug accentuate its elegant form and shape. This jug dates back to the late 1800s from the Basilicata region of southern Italy and was primarily used as a vessel for wine and water. Today, the antique piece would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or as a decorative display piece.
Found in Ostuni
the charming hilltop town of the Valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).
Dimensions: H26cm x W19cm x D15.5cm
