Antique Hand Painted 'Righe & Stelle' Vasetto

€195.00
Sold

A very rare and antique hand-thrown vase with the hand painted floral motif that is a symbol of the Puglia region, known as ‘righe & stelle’ (or stars and stripes). Dating back to the mid 1800s, this piece is particularly rare as the design was usually hand painted on to plates and jugs, less commonly vases. The ‘righe & stelle’ motif is particular to Grottaglie, a town in Puglia famed for its age-old ceramic craft, where circles are combined to create rosettes or star formations. Since the mid 1800s the flowers were made with stencils, originally cut from sponges. The rustic vase has been lovingly hand painted with the mustard and ochre stripes in varying widths at the rim, and pastel blue flowerets around the body of the vessel, set against a soft buttermilk glaze. The vasetto has that well-loved patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. Today, this wonderful piece would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or as a decorative display piece. Create an impactful display with the matching ‘righe & stelle’ jugs as seen in the images.
