Antique Hand Painted Rustic Pastel Plate
A large hand painted serving plate from Puglia dating back to the late 1800s. The antique plate would have been primarily used for domestic use and more specifically to serve a family during meals. What makes this charming plate unique is the hand painted linear design with spots around the outer rim. It has a wonderful colour combination of sea blue and pastel yellow set against the buttermilk glaze, making it a one of a kind piece. Despite the abstract patterns that decorated this and other antique crockery from the region, the bowls were used by families for everyday life. The old clay pottery of southern Italian regions like Puglia, Calabria and Basilicata, is thick and robust, and has a lovely handmade, rustic feel. This large plate also has that special patina that only the passing of time can bring about. Today the antique plate would make a lovely decorative display item or a great centrepiece on a kitchen table, injecting some country charm into any space. Create impact with the matching jugs as seen in the images.
