Antique Hand Painted Sicilian 'Quartara' Vase
A hand painted antique vase with two handles unique to Sicily called a Quartara. This type of vessel of ancient peasant origins was traditionally used to transport wine or water and keep it fresh on those long hot summer days. This large vase is dated 1825 (hand painted on the back of the vase) and originates from Caltagirone, a town in Sicily renowned for its age old ceramic craft and tradition. A particularity of the vase is that by blowing into the opening it emits a dark sound and was used as a musical accompaniment in Sicilian folk music during popular festivals. This unique vase is extra special due to the mesmerising hand painted motif adorning the front. The oversize foliage design abstractly cascades into a ‘wave’ motif in pastel green with yellow highlights, offset by the ivory glaze. The one of a kind piece has that magical patina that only the passing of time and daily use can authentically bring about. Today, the large hand thrown vessel would be ideal as a vase for fresh or dried flowers, or as a decorative display piece to add farmhouse charm to any home or space - especially when pared with the matching vases as seen in the images.
