Antique Ivory Glaze Jug
On a truly spectacular scale, this hand-thrown antique jug dates back to the late 1800s from the nearby region of Basilicata, and with its unique undulating form, is a rare piece. The skill of the potter can be seen in the pattern of the jug, from the pinched spout to the fluted form that elegantly spirals around the body. The large terracotta jug represents the finest and most expensive kind of this domestic, ‘ceramica rustica’ - with its ivory-coloured glaze known as ‘robba bianca’, it is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. Testament to the jug’s age is the subtle crackled surface that gives depth and texture to the ivory coloured glaze. It would have been originally used to hold water or wine. Today, the perfectly rustic item can be used as a vase for flowers or as a decorative display piece.
Found in Martina Franca
the hilltop town in the Valle d’Itria known for its baroque architecture.
Dimensions: H28cm x W20cm x D17cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
