Antique Rustic Ceremonial Jug
A particularly rare hand painted ceramic jug from Puglia, dating back to the early 1800s. The hand thrown vessel would have been primarily used during church service and ceremonies to pour wine. The antique pitcher features a hand painted abstract scene with a cross in the centre, and linear patterns in sky blue and accents of black, set against a buttermilk glaze. The rustic jug also features an 'inverted human nose' shape for its lip (or pinched spout) that is typical of pitchers from the southern Italian region. The antique jug has that magical patina brought about authentically from the passing of time and years of daily use. Today, it would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or as a decorative display piece adding some country charm to any home or space.
Found in Lecce
the Baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.
Dimensions: H22cm x W15cm x D13cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
