Large Antique Hand Painted Calabrese Bowl
An impressively sized hand thrown serving bowl with a unique hand decorated design. The antique bowl features a free-spirited hand painted motif in vivid green that is common to the nearby region of Calabria (Italy’s toe). Dating back to the late 1800s, the designs are typically very simple with green circular motifs and abstract patterns that decorated crockery used for everyday life. The old clay pottery from Calabria is thick and robust, and has a lovely handmade, rustic feel. This bowl would have been primarily used for domestic use - as a vessel to wash fruit and vegetables, also as serving bowl during family mealtimes. It has the magical patina brought about authentically from daily use and the passing of time. Today, the extra large farmhouse bowl would make a lovely decorative display item or a great centrepiece. Add some country charm with the matching bowls as seen in the images.
