Large Antique Hand Painted Rustic Bowl

A large hand painted serving bowl or ‘coppa’ from Calabria dating back to the late 1800s, with its unique linear motifs in verdant green. Despite the abstract patterns that decorated this and other antique crockery from the region, the bowls were used by families for everyday life. The old clay pottery of southern Italian regions like Calabria, Puglia and Basilicata, is thick and robust, and has a lovely handmade, rustic feel. This large bowl has that special patina that only the passing of time can bring about. It would have been primarily used for domestic use and more specifically to serve a family during meals - where they would have all eaten from the single plate (beginning with the father, and ending with the children). Today the antique bowl would make a lovely decorative display item or a great centrepiece on a kitchen table, injecting some country charm into any space.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).

Dimensions: H7cm x W32cm x D32cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
