This hand-thrown antique jug dates back to the late 1800s from Puglia. Known as ‘srulu’ in local dialect, it was commonly used for wine and is known for having an inverted human nose shape for its lip (or pinched spout). The large jug represents the finest and most expensive kind of this domestic, ‘ceramica rustica’ - with its ivory-coloured glaze known as ‘robba bianca’, it is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. The jug in the soft buttermilk glaze and elegant form is a particular rare find in its large dimension. It features that magical patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and years of daily use. Today the charming farmhouse jug would be perfect as a vase for flowers or as a decorative display piece, especially when pared with the matching ceramics as seen in the images.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as the la città bianca (or ‘white city’).

Dimensions: H29cm x W19cm x D16cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
