This antique pair of small and large plates with their hand painted floral motif that is a symbol of the Puglia region and known as ‘righe e stelle’. The design is particular to Grottaglie, a town famed for its age-old ceramic craft, where circles are combined to create rosettes or star formations. Since the mid 1800s the flowers were made with stencils, originally cut from sponges. These types of plates were in use up until the 1950s/60s, where the whole family ate together from one such plate. Today, this set of plates, with their lovely buttermilk glaze would make the perfect addition to the kitchen as a fruit bowl on the table or bench. Also available is a matching jug to complete the set, which would make an impactful centrepiece display.

Found in Lecce

the capital and baroque jewel of the Salento.

Dimensions: Large Plate H5cm x W30cm x D30cm / Small Plate H4cm x W23cm x D23cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
