Small Antique Rustic Anchovy Pot
This charming antique confit pot or ‘vasettu’ was originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies and sardines, as well as figs or olives, in olive oil. Dating back to the early 1900s, this vessel is commonly associated with the Grottaglie region of Puglia, known for its age old ceramic craft. This hand thrown rustic pot features two handles and sgraffito banding around the top section. Often a linen cloth was tied around the top with a rope (around the indents) to keep the insects out of its contents. This kind of pottery represents the finest and most expensive kind of this domestic, ‘ceramica rustica’. With its ivory-coloured glaze known as ‘robba bianca’, it is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. Today the antique piece would make an ideal vessel for fresh flowers or simply to inject some farmhouse charm to any home or space, especially when pared with the larger anchovy pot as seen in the images.
