XL Antique Hand Painted Floral Plate

€470.00

A beautifully hand painted plate from Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia known for its ceramic craft and tradition. Dating back to the mid 1800s, this large antique piece features a green leaf and mustard yellow floral design at its center, with abstract squiggles in both colours that frames the motif around the edge of the plate. It was most likely gifted to a young couple on their wedding day, with the hand painted foliage decoration traditionally being a symbol of fertility, prosperity and good fortune. The old farmhouse pottery from Puglia, like this large platter, is thick and robust, and has a lovely handmade, rustic feel. Primarily used to serve a family during meal times, where they would have eaten off the same plate beginning with the father and ending with the children. The antique plate shows signs of its years of use and has developed a wonderful patina over time. This extra special hand thrown piece would make a lovely addition to the kitchen or table setting, adding some country charm to any space.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).

Dimensions: H6.5cm x W40cm x D40cm
