Antique Abstract Hand Painted Confit Pot
This antique piece is a unique example of confit pots of the region - with its simply elegant form and handles, and a minimally abstract hand painted motif that adorns the front. Dating back to the early 1900s, the large hand thrown pot was originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies, sardines, figs or olives in olive oil and would have been in domestic use up until the 1950s/60s. The spirited black hand painted decoration is set against a buttermilk glaze and signifies good fortune and longevity, and renders the pot a one of a kind piece. Today, it would make an ideal vase for fresh flowers or as a decorative display piece.
Found in Ostuni
the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as the città bianca (‘white city’).
