Antique Black Glaze Jug

€360.00
Sold

A spectacularly rare jug with black liquid glaze around the spout, twisted handle and linear border etched around its wonderful spherical body. This large, hand-thrown antique jug with a beautifully stark black glaze set against the natural ochre base, is particular to the Salento town of Lucugnano. Dating back to the late 1800s, its scale is impressive, and with its spirited black lines, and unusually ‘glamorous’ glaze that sets it apart from the raw clay, it is a one of a kind piece. It would have been originally used to hold water, its thick clay keeping it fresh and cool for the farmers. Today, the wonderful item can be used as a vase for flowers or as a decorative display piece.

Found in Lucugnano

the small Salento town known for its ceramic craft.

Dimensions: H33cm x W26cm x D24cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
