An antique handmade ceramic jug with a unique stripe effect glaze. Originally used to hold wine or water, this medium sized jug dates back to the early 1900s. The glaze features a zebra-style effect with irregular stripes in an ochre brown set against a rich buttermilk base. This elegantly-formed jug is most likely associated with Michele Smaltino, an artist and ceramicist from Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia known for its age old ceramic craft and tradition. Smaltino was one of the first students of the School of Art, who then ran an important ceramic workshop in the town for over 35 years. This one-of-a-kind ceramic piece would be perfect to create an impactful display with the marble-glaze jugs, as seen in the images.

Found in Martina Franca

the hilltop town of the Valle d’Itria known for its impressive examples of baroque architecture.

Dimensions: H15cm x W14cm x D12cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
