Antique Calabrese Farmhouse Bowl
This large antique serving bowl from Calabria dates back to the late 1800s, and features a spirited hand painted design in pistachio green set against a buttermilk-hue base. It would have been primarily used for domestic use and more specifically to serve a family during meals - where they would have all eaten from the single plate (beginning with the father, and ending with the children). Despite the abstract patterns that decorated this and other antique crockery from the region, the bowls were domestic items, used for everyday life. The old terracotta pottery from southern Italy is thick and robust, with that unmistakable handmade feel. This rustic bowl has that special patina that only the passing of time and daily use can authentically bring about. Today, the antique bowl would make a great table centrepiece or fruit bowl, injecting some southern Italian charm to your kitchen or dining space.
