Antique Confit Pot with Drip Glaze
This antique confit pot dating back to the early 1900s was originally used for preserving a family’s most valued food such as anchovies, sardines, figs, eggplants, artichokes or olives in olive oil. Commonly associated with the Grottaglie region of Puglia, (known for its age old ceramic craft) it represents the finest and most expensive kind of this domestic, ‘ceramica rustica’. With its ivory-coloured glaze known as ‘robba bianca’, it is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. What sets this piece apart is the dazzling mustard glaze on the side of the pot - most likely a mistake during the firing process, that gives it a charming individuality. This ‘vasettu’ would make an ideal vase, storage or as a decorative display piece injecting some country charm to any home or space.
