Antique Glaze 'Pignate' Pot

The epitome of ‘ceramica rustica’, this antique pot with its robust spherical body and unique handles was typical of what was used in the whole of southern Italy for cooking legumes, often with lamb. Dating back to the early 1900s, these simple terracotta cooking pots with 2 handles are called ‘pignate’ and more often than not did not have decorations adorning them. The upper part is glazed so it can be wipe clean for hygiene purposes, not simply decorative. The hole at the front was possibly used to the drain the liquid whilst cooking (with a cork to hold in place). The tonality of the ochre glaze set against the smoky grey base and its unique patina from years of use, adds character to the piece. It would be ideal as a decorative display piece.

Found in Lecce

the Baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.

Dimensions: H21.5cm x W19cm x D19cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
