Antique Green Glazed Amphora

€170.00
Sold

An antique hand-thrown amphora with beautifully formed green glazed handles extending from the spout. Originally used for wine or water to keep it fresh for farmers working the land on those long, hot summer days, the green glaze on top was intended for hygiene purposes to wipe clean, rather than simply decorative. This original piece with its elegant form has sgraffito lines around the upper part of the body likely to contain drips and spills. This utility drinking vessel features a raw surface texture and patina from daily use. Today, it would make a distinctive display piece to compliment any space.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the Valle d’Itria known as ‘la città bianca’ (or white city).

Dimensions: H30cm x W19cm x D18cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
