Antique Hand Painted Abstract Bowl
An antique hand painted bowl with a wonderfully abstract and spirited design, reminiscent of springtime. The large, hand thrown bowl dates back to the early 1900s, and can be attributed to the traditional Portuguese faience of ‘ratinho’. Common to these ceramics is the decorative sponged branches of flowers and leaves, reminiscent of ancient Persian ceramics. Here the unique design can be seen in ochre brown with splashes of indigo and turquoise blue as well as a pop of orange. Traditionally this domestic pottery was made coarse and strong, so that it could be transported in the saddlebags to sometimes be used as a bargaining chip by the rural folk of Coimbra for other products. Today this antique bowl would be ideal as a centrepiece on a table for fruit or perfect to inject some colour as a decorative display item.
Found in Lecce
the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.
Dimensions: H8cm x W31cm x D31cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
