Antique Hand Painted Pharmacy Pot
This antique and rare piece of pottery was originally used to store herbs and spices and ointments for medicinal purposes. The hand thrown vase dating back to the 1800s, is called a ‘vasettu ti spezzeria’ (herb jar) in local dialect and originates from Grottaglie, Puglia. Although the form is typical of antique pharmacy jars from the region, the hand painted motif is very unique and designed to identify its contents. The farmacia's 'crest' in soft pastels is set against a buttermilk colour base creating a fresh 'modern' aesthetic. The vase has a well-loved patina brought about authentically from years of use and the passing of time. The wonderful colour combination, and hand crafted quality, give this vessel infinite charm. Today this one of a kind vessel would make a lovely vase for fresh flowers adding a splash of colour to any home or space, especially when teamed with the matching ceramics as seen in the images.
