Antique Hand Painted 'Righe & Stelle' Bowl
This large hand painted ceramic bowl is typical of Pugliese domestic pottery. Dating back to the early 1900s, the ‘righe & stelle’ motif is particular to Grottaglie, a town in Puglia renowned for its age-old ceramic craft, where circles are combined to create rosettes or star formations. Since the mid 1800s the flowers were made with stencils, originally cut from sponges. This hand thrown bowl is particularly unique as the design differs slightly with a circular motif (as opposed to a rosette). The bowl would have been in use up until the mid 1900s, and specifically to serve a family during meal times. The rustic farmhouse-style bowl features the traditional colour combination of sea blue flower and black stripe, set against the buttermilk-hue glaze. The old clay pottery from Puglia, like this bowl, is thick and robust, and has a lovely handmade, rustic feel. The well loved piece shows its characteristic signs of age with a wonderful patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The antique piece would make a lovely addition to the kitchen, as decorative display or a great centrepiece on a table for fruit and vegetables. Also available are matching righe & stelle ceramic plates and bowls in various sizes, as seen in the images.
