Antique Ivory Glaze Amphora
The ivory-coloured glaze was particularly widespread especially with ceramics storing food, wine or olive oil, like this antique amphora made in the mid to late 1800s in Puglia. Called ‘robba bianca’ it represents the finest kind of ‘ceramica rustica’, and is produced with a pewter glaze and twice fired. Specific to the Grottaglie tradition of ceramics, this traditional piece has a lot of character - with the elegant, elongated proportions of the handles, the unique crackled glaze and the potter has left a charming mark - a small indent on its otherwise perfectly spherical body. This antique amphora has seen over 150 years of service to its family, and naturally shows some charming signs of age. This historical example would make the perfect decorative centre piece in any home.
Found in Grottaglie
a small Salento town famous for its age old ceramic craft.
Dimensions: H48cm x W26cm x D26cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
