Antique Marbled Confit Pot
Antique hand thrown terracotta pot with a unique iridescent maroon and mustard glaze. This old technique of marble glazing is common to Grottaglie, a town in Puglia renowned for its age old ceramic craft. Dating back to the early 1900s, this kind of pottery is called a ‘vasettu smarmriatu cu lu cuperchiu’ in local dialect. Originally the terracotta jar was used for preserving foods in olive oil, such as artichokes, eggplants, peppers or salted anchovies. Today, this one of a kind vessel would be ideal for storage, used as a vase for fresh flowers, or simply decorative.
