An antique handmade ceramic jug with a mesmerising marbled glaze. Originally used to hold wine or water, this jug dates back to the early 1900s and features the name ‘Smaltino, Grottaglie’ stamped on the underside. Michele Smaltino was a well known artist and ceramicist and director of an important workshop in the town. The marbling in various shades of pistachio green and ochre brown, is common to pottery from Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia known for its age old ceramic craft and tradition. What makes this piece particularly unique is the hand crafted gargoyle/face design at the spout, applied for good luck and to ward off any evil. This one-of-a-kind ceramic piece would be perfect to create an impactful display with the matching marble-glaze jugs, as seen in the images.

Found in Martina Franca

the hilltop town of the Valle d’Itria known for its impressive examples of baroque architecture.

Dimensions: H19cm x W17cm x D17cm
