Antique 'Righe e Stelle' Jug

€130.00
Sold

An antique hand-thrown jug with the hand painted floral motif that is a symbol of the Puglia region, known as ‘righe e stelle’. The design is particular to Grottaglie, a town famed for its age-old ceramic craft, where circles are combined to create rosettes or star formations. Since the mid 1800s the flowers were made with stencils, originally cut from sponges. Wine and water jugs from Puglia usually have the most extensive decorations and this one dates back to the early 1900s, with its lovely buttermilk glaze and well-loved patina. Today, this wonderful piece would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or as a decorative display piece. Also available with a matching pair of plates to complete the set, as seen in the images.

Found in Lecce

the capital and baroque jewel of the Salento.

Dimensions: H20cm x W15cm x D11.5cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration.
