Antique Rustic Green Rim Pot
This large antique vessel from Puglia called ‘pitale’ was used primarily for storing olive oil. The contents could be easily extracted with a ladle due to its larger opening and no ‘neck’. During the winter months the large handmade pot was often used for conserving dried figs. Usually the outer main body was left unglazed or partially glazed, whilst it was glazed internally for storing the liquid or food contents. This technique would also minimise the cost of producing these utility vessels. The handmade piece has a lot of character due to its rustic patina, the 2 handles highlighting its hand crafted quality, and the pastel green glaze around the rim set against the raw, earthy base. This historical example would make the perfect vase or decorative display piece in any home, especially when pared with the other farmhouse vessels as seen in the images.
