Antique Rustic Hand Painted Vase

€240.00

A charmingly rustic ceramic vase with two handles, delicately fluted opening and a uniquely abstract hand painted design. This historical vase, called ‘cuccuma’ in the neighbouring region of Calabria, dates back to the early 1800s from the Calabrese town of Gerocane -a centre for producing fine domestic pottery since the 16th century. The vase was traditionally used for ceremonial purposes, most likely to contain wine or holy water. It features a spirited surface decoration in pastel green and ochre brown across the body on both sides as well as a stripe bordering the rim of the fluted spout, set against a well loved ivory glaze. The antique hand-thrown vessel has an organic surface and patina that has eroded over time, testament to its daily use and passing of time. Today, this charming historical vessel would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers or decorative display item adding some farmhouse charm into any home or space.
