A charming and one of a kind antique jug dating back to the late 1800s and hailing from Sicily. This hand-thrown piece was originally used for wine or water and would have taken pride of place in a family home. Its rotund shape and elegant form and handle, are characteristic of pottery from Caltagirone, a Sicilian town renowned for its age old ceramic craft. The splatter effect and unique colour combination of green with splashes of orange make this piece a showstopper. The green splatter effect on the surface comes from the ancient tradition of ‘smammriato’ - where artisans, in order to conceal defects from enamelling, dripped additional colours on the surface using small branches, especially bunches of thyme or from olive trees as a brush. Today this antique vessel would make a lovely decorative display piece, adding a pop of colour to any home or space.

Found in Martina Franca

an elegant town of the valle d’Itria known for its baroque architecture.

Dimensions: H16cm x W21cm x D16cm
