Antique Swirl Motif Amphora
An antique amphora with a hand painted mustard yellow swirl motif on both sides. The large hand-thrown vessel has a beautifully formed robust body and handles that are a fluid extension of the spout. Originating from the southern Italian region of Calabria, it was originally used for holding wine or water - keeping it fresh for farmers working the land on those long, hot summer days. The mustard yellow glaze on the spout and handle was added for hygiene purposes to wipe clean, rather than simply decorative. This original piece has a raw, earthy surface texture and the wonderful patina from daily use, that only the passing of time can bring. Today, it can be used as a bud vase or as a decorative display piece to inject some farmhouse charm to any space or home.
Found in Lecce
the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.
Dimensions: H35cm x W26cm x D26cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
