Antique Yellow Glaze Confit Pot

An antique confit pot with partial glaze and two uniquely formed handles. This charmingly rustic pot was made in the late 1800s and originates from the town of Grottaglie in southern Puglia. The handmade vessel was originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies, sardines, figs or olives in olive oil. It is internally glazed and features an outer top glaze in a honey yellow hue, offset by the raw clay base. This partial glaze was a hygienic (and economical) addition rather than purely decorative, to be wiped clean easily after use. It was also a less expensive technique used rather than glazing the entire vessel. The antique pot has that magical patina that comes about authentically from many years of use and exposure. Ideal as a vase for fresh or dried flowers, add some rustic farmhouse charm to your home or space especially when pared with the matching pieces as seen in the images.

Found in Grottaglie

the small town in southern Puglia renowned for its age old ceramic craft.

Dimensions: H28cm x W30cm x D21cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
