Large Antique Hand Painted Rustic Bowl
An antique hand painted bowl with a design characteristic of plates and bowls from the southern-most regions of Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria. This large historic example dates back to the late 1800s and features a decorative sponge-effect design in turquoise green set against an ivory glaze. Often this decorative element, commonly seen on local pottery, was created using potato skins ‘as paint brushes’, dabbed onto the outer edges of the stoneware. The charming, farmhouse-style piece has a robust handmade quality, common to domestic pottery of the region.
