Large Vintage Twisted Handle Amphora
This vintage amphora with its sculptural form and impressive scale, was originally used to hold wine for farmers working the land, the thick robust clay keeping it fresh and cool in the summer months. Dating back to the first half of the 1900s it originates from the Pugliese town of Grottaglie. Called a ‘cuccu’ in local dialect, the wine flask par excellence features a spectacular glaze and twisted handles typical of ceramics from this southern region of Puglia. The large, hand-thrown piece with its vivacious mustard yellow glaze would make a perfect display piece adding that splash of colour to brighten up any home or space.
Found in Grottaglie
