Large Antique Blue Tree of Life Pot
This antique confit pot has a truly magical, minimal and spirited hand painted motif adorning the front. This confit pot was made in the early 1900s and originates from the southern Italian region of Calabria. The abstract tree of life decoration signifies good fortune and longevity to the largely rural folk of the time, with hopes of a bountiful harvest. Originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies, sardines, figs or olives in olive oil, it was often topped with a handmade wooden lid to keep insects out. What sets this confit pot apart (besides its large size) is the ink blue colour of the tree of life design as traditionally they were hand painted in green or mustard yellow. Today this large example would be ideal as a vase for fresh or dried flowers, or as a decorative display piece to add farmhouse charm to any home or space.
Found in Ostuni
the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).
Dimensions: H31cm x W24cm x D21.5cm
