Large Antique Green Glaze Amphora
A remarkable hand-thrown amphora with a beautiful form and luminous green glaze that really makes it a one of a kind piece. This striking vessel dating back to the late 1800s, originates from the southern Italian region of Puglia and was used to store wine. Called a ‘trimmone’ in local dialect, the amphorae originally had a wood stopper wrapped in a piece of cloth to seal contents. What makes this large antique amphora particularly unique is the mustard drip or ‘stripe’ on the top half of the vessel - most likely brought about by 'mistake' during the firing process, where the glaze from other pots would have dripped on to the amphora. This colour combination of the mustardy yellow ‘stripe’ and the pistachio green half glaze that gives way to the earthy clay base, makes this a very special piece. It has developed a beautiful rustic patina that only daily use and the passing of time can authentically bring about. This large historic example with its vivacious green glaze would be ideal as a decorative display piece to inject a splash of colour and some farmhouse charm to any home or space.
