Large Antique Green Plant Pot with Old Repair

€170.00

This large antique ceramic planter is a characteristic example of plant pots from Grottaglie, a town in southern Puglia known for its age old ceramic craft. The hand thrown planter features an iridescent pistachio green glaze, sgraffito banding and scalloped detailing around the top edge. The thumb indents of the potter that can be seen around the top, were probably added to facilitate the grip to move the large pot (and avoid picking it up from the scalloped edge), as well as being a decorative element. Dating back to the late 1800s, these details give the plant pot its unique and charming aesthetic. The green glazed planter is unglazed internally and has a hole at the bottom for drainage. It also features an old repair with metal staples as seen in the images - when pottery was repaired using this traditional method, before the availability of adhesives. This plant pot, as with other utilitarian ceramics of the region, was considered very valuable to the family and would have been repaired rather than thrown away. The large rustic pot is a great size and would be ideal to add a splash of colour to any home or space, both indoors or outdoors.
