Large Antique Green Sponge Glaze Plate
An antique hand painted plate with a design characteristic of plates and bowls from southern Italy, more specifically associated with the ‘sponge-ware’ ceramics of Caltagirone, Sicily. This large platter dates back to the late 1800s and features a hand painted floral motif at centre stage in black, with circular rings framing the flower and the rim of the plate. What sets this plate apart is the wonderfully decorative sponge-effect design in pistachio green with subtle flower clusters in contrasting blue. This sponge design which commonly decorated the outer edge of plates and bowls, was often created using a potato skin dabbed onto the ceramic piece to achieve this sponge-like effect. The charming, farmhouse-style piece has a rustic patina brought about authentically by the passing of time and daily use. The antique plate is the perfect piece to inject some country charm to any kitchen or table setting, especially when pared with the matching small plate as seen in the images.
