Large Antique Hand Painted Bowl with Old Repair
A large antique serving bowl or ‘coppa’ from Calabria dating back to the mid 1800s. The hand thrown terracotta bowl features an abstract design in green and mustard yellow representing nature and the tree of life, set against a white glaze. The unique motif was hand painted on to ceramics of the region to bring good fortune and longevity to the largely rural folk of the time. Despite the abstract patterns that decorated this and other antique crockery from the region, the bowls were domestic items, used by families for everyday life. This large rustic bowl also has an old repair with metal staples as seen in the images. Before the availability of adhesives, ceramics were repaired using this traditional method. These domestic pieces of pottery were considered valuable pieces to the family, and would be repaired rather than thrown away. The ceramic bowl has that special patina that only the passing of time and daily use can authentically bring about. Today, the hand painted bowl would make a great table centrepiece or fruit bowl, injecting some southern Italian charm to your kitchen or dining space.
Found in Lecce
