Small Antique Hand Painted Pharmacy Jar
A charmingly rustic, hand painted jar historically used for pharmaceuticals in a characteristic design unique to the southern Italian region of Calabria. Dating from the mid-1800s, this hand thrown ceramic vase is decorated with splashes of vivid painted lines - in pistachio green, mustardy yellow, and earthy ochre - on a cream slip glazed base and green edging on the rim. The wonderful patina is consistent with age and use and shows signs of wear, which gives the jar its immense character. This jar, along with the matching vessels seen in the images, were found as part of a collection from an old Calabrese pharmacy and are particularly rare - especially being a matching set. Today they are an ideal vessel for fresh flowers or to add some farmhouse charm and create an impactful display.
Found in Tropea
a charming seaside town on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria.
Dimensions: H20cm x W14.5cm x D11cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
