Large Antique Hand Painted Plate with Initials
A rustic terracotta serving plate from Puglia that dates back to the mid 1800s. The large antique plate features a ‘modern’ colour combination of pastel green, and ochre brown rings, set against a buttermilk glaze, that gives the piece its very unique character. The hand painted initials at the centre of the plate were usually added to represent the family the tableware belonged to (and in some cases the monastery). This farmhouse-style plate would have been primarily used for domestic, everyday life and more specifically to serve a family during meals - where they would have all eaten from the single plate - beginning with the father, and ending with the children. The old terracotta pottery of southern Italy is thick and robust and these types of plates would have been in use up until the 1950s/60s, after which mass production made this handmade ceramic obsolete. This antique plate has that magical patina that only the passing of time and daily use can bring about authentically. It would make a great centrepiece in the kitchen or dining table, adding come country charm to any space.
