This charming antique confit pot or ‘vasettu’ was originally used for preserving foods such as anchovies and sardines, as well as figs or olives, in olive oil. Dating back to the late 1800s, this vessel is commonly associated with the Grottaglie region of Puglia, known for its age old ceramic craft. This robust, rustic pot features two handles and sgraffito banding around the top section. Often a linen cloth was tied around the top with a rope (around the indents) to keep the insects out of its contents. What sets this vessel apart from other anchovy pots is its unique creamy glaze and drip effect, as well its well aged patina adding buckets of charm. Today the antique piece would make an ideal vessel for fresh flowers or simply to inject some farmhouse charm to any home or space, especially when pared with the smaller pot as seen in the images.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).

Dimensions: H24.5cm x W26cm x D20cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration.
