Large Antique Rustic Bowl with Old Repair
A charming hand painted bowl that is typical of southern Italian ceramics, with a striking design that renders it quite ‘modern’ in design. Dating back to the late 1800s, the large hand thrown bowl originates from Castelli - a town in Abruzzo whose ceramic art has very ancient origins and became one of the most renowned centres for artistic pottery by the 16th century. The antique bowl features a unique stencil technique design in royal blue that borders the edge with hand painted circular motifs in the bowl’s centre, set against the creamy white glaze. It would have been primarily used for domestic use up until the mid 1900s, and specifically to serve a family during meal times. The rustic bowl has developed a wonderful crackled patina brought about authentically by daily use and the passing of time. It also features a metal staple on the back, as seen in the images. Before the availability of adhesives, pottery was repaired using this traditional method. These domestic pieces of pottery were considered valuable pieces to the family, and would be repaired rather than thrown away. These imperfections and wear are distinguishing signs of authenticity. This farmhouse-style piece would make a lovely addition to a kitchen bench top or centrepiece on a table for fruit and vegetables, adding some Italian country charm to any space.
