Large Antique Twisted Handle Amphora

€225.00
Sold

An antique hand-thrown amphora with a beautifully formed robust body and twisted handles that are a fluid extension of the spout. This original piece has a raw surface texture and patina from daily use, with the wonderful sunflower yellow glaze on the top handles and spout. Traditionally used for water (or wine) to keep it fresh for farmers working the land on those long, hot summer days, the yellow glaze on top was used for hygiene purposes to wipe clean, rather than simply decorative. Today, it can be used as a bud vase or create an impactful decorative display with its matching smaller amphora (with pistachio green glaze), as seen in the images.

Found in Ostuni

the charming hilltop town of the Valle d’Itria known as la città bianca (or ‘white city’).

Dimensions: H32cm x W22cm x D21cm

These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
