Large Antique Unglazed Amphora
Antique unglazed amphora made in the late 1800s in Puglia and found in a noble family palazzo in Grottaglie. With its distinctive shape and earthy colouring of cream and pastel hues, this large terracotta amphora is over 150 years old and shows characteristic signs of age including an old repair that would have been done after a crack appeared after it had been fired. Rustically charming - the handles still have the ‘makers mark’ - the smoothing by hand of the potter as they constructed the amphora. Originally made to hold water or wine by farmers in the countryside, this is a beautiful and historic example with its age characteristics adding to its beauty - it would make the perfect decorative piece in any home.
Found in Grottaglie
the small town in Puglia famous for its ceramic craft.
Dimensions: H50cm x W31cm x D28.5cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
