Large Antique Yellow Glaze Pot
This hand thrown, cylindrical shaped pot known as a ‘capasa’ in Puglia has a vivacious yellow glaze set against the raw clay. The confit pot is internally glazed as it was originally used to preserve foods like ricotta forte (a local salty cheese) or olives in brine - with the outer remaining naturally unglazed. The antique pot has an organic patina which has eroded beautifully over time with use, making it ever more charming. The partial glaze was added for hygienic (and economical) purposes rather than decorative, so it could be wiped clean easily after use. It was also a less expensive technique used rather than glazing the entire vessel. There is an indent on the external upper edge where a cloth would have been tied with a rope to cover the precious contents. Today the farmhouse pot makes a lovely decorative display piece, or could be used as a vase or planter.
Found in Lecce
the baroque jewel and capital of the Salento.
Dimensions: H29cm x W20cm x D20cm
These are handmade antique ceramics that are perfectly imperfect and some have been used for generations, so please expect some cracks, and chips, and discolouration. These individual characteristics are part of the charm and unique quality of each piece. Please note, colour may vary from screen to screen.
