Antique Hand Painted 'Evil Eye' Jug
A rare antique jug with pinched spout from Puglia, dating back to the mid 1800s. The medium-sized jug has been hand painted with eyes at the top and the evil eye motif around the main body in ochre brown set against the buttermilk glaze. The ‘eyes’ that decorate wine jugs in the region were mainly added to ward off the ‘malocchio’ (a malevolent glare ). The rustic hand thrown jug features that magic patina brought about authentically from years of daily use and the passing of time. Today, this wonderful piece with its truly one of a kind design would be ideal as a vase for fresh flowers, unique addition to table setting or simply decorative, especially when pared with the matching classic Pugliese jugs as seen in the images.
Found in Lecce

Dimensions: H21cm x W14.5cm x D13cm
